John Blackburn, Ph.D., has practiced meditation for over 45 years, practicing intensively with teachers in the Vipassana, Zen, and Dzogchen traditions. It is through the practice of Mindfulness that we come to understand who we are, who others are, and how we can find well-being in our daily life. Mindfulness is the acceptance of our experience without judgment. In the absence of judgment, we see more clearly what is happening in our minds and in the world around us. This clear seeing cleanses our perception of the world and enables us to touch life in all its freshness, wonder, and immediacy.

This course is designed for beginners. It is also appropriate for anyone wanting to refresh their understanding of Mindfulness or re-establish their meditation practice. If you have had trouble being consistent in meditation, taking a class can be a good way to energize and re-dedicate yourself. In this course we will learn to work with body, mind, thoughts, and emotions.

There is a suggested donation of $60, which covers all four classes. This is a suggested donation, and participants are free to offer any amount.

After the class, a weekly follow-up meeting will be offered at no cost to answer questions and help you maintain a regular practice.

Two sections of this class are offered. The content is the same. The only difference is location, date, and time. Should you miss a particular class, you may be able to make it up by attending the other section. Please speak to me about this.

In Tibetan Buddhism the practices of Lojong comprise a profound yet practical method for cultivating wisdom and compassion, the hallmarks of the awakened mind. Lojong is a concise presentation of the entire path; it is said that when we practice this, we are practicing everything. As a basic text we will use The Great Path of Awakening by Jamgon Kongtrul (Shambala 2005.) Having a text is highly recommended but not a requirement for participating in the class.  Students may use a translation and commentary of their own choosing. If you decide not to purchase the Kongtrul text, you can read it online at this link: http://promienie.net/images/dharma/books/kongtrul_great-path-of-awakening.pdf.  Note that the page numbers are slightly different.

This three-week class will include teachings and guided meditations related to the most common obstacles in meditation practice. Most importantly, this will be a workshop where students will be encouraged to identify specific obstacles in their personal practice and develop a plan for working skillfully with them.

There is a suggested donation of $45, but participants are free to offer any amount.
