Dear Friends,

As we continue our exploration of Unconditional Love, please do the following two things before our class on Sunday.

First, read pp. 58-60 in Awakening Through Love and check your understanding of the instructions and rationale he provides. Then, practice looking for the source and destination of thoughts (pp.58-59).  Please make this a part of your daily practice. Equally important is to learn to use the two questions (see next paragraph) in daily life.

Do this meditation in a relaxed way.

Start with Field of Care meditation.

After resting for a bit in open awareness, pick any thought that arises.

Ask “Where did that come from?” and Just Look. Don’t think.

Then ask the second question “Where did it go?” and look. What do you see?

Don’t try to answer in words.  This learning is experiential, not conceptual.

Don’t try to catch every thought; just pick one, ask the questions and look inwardly to see what can be seen.

If the questions become sing-songy, like you are just repeating the words, stop. Relax. Open your eyes, come back to your body, recall the instructions, and begin anew.  Do this for 3-4 minutes and then many times during the day. Just notice any thought and inquire.

Secondly, John Makransky speaks of three modes of the meditations (Receptive, Deepening, and Inclusive.) The Receptive Mode includes Meditations 1-3 in your handout. In these we are learning to receive loving qualities from our true nature, and we have shared these qualities many times in class and Sangha. In addition, we are learning to receive parts of ourself that may disrupt the meditation or that may be emotionally disturbing. Please reflect on how Receptivity has grown over the last three years in your life and practice. What are you more open and receptive to?  Please bring some examples of this to share in class. Everyone will benefit from your sharing because they are markers of what we are learning.

I look forward to seeing you Sunday at 2:00.

John

Homework for Week 1

Use this link https://sustainablecompassion.org/audio/

to be led in Field of Care (FOC) meditation by John Makransky and also by Paul Condon.

Make use of the script for Meditation 1 to ensure you are following the instructions.

Use their guided meditations—or your own personal way of doing the FOC practice— each day this week. In my opinion, neither of these recordings allows sufficient time for receiving the loving energy, so you might want to pause the recording at that point, while you do the following:

Take your time with receiving and accepting the warmth of the loving energy into your body and mind.  Begin with the crown of your head and slowly recognize this warmth as it flows through every part of you. When this feels like complete acceptance and embodiment of the loving energy, you can resume the recording in the Releasing phase or simply read and follow the instructions for Releasing phase.

Linger in his instruction “let this help your heart and mind to trust, relax, release all its frameworks, and become completely open like space.”

End your practice with 3 or 4 minutes of looking for the source and destination of thoughts, using his guidance on pp. 58-59.  End the practice by resting in the complete openness of Unbounded Space.

Dedicate the Merit.

Bring to class something to share from your experience of looking for the source and destination.
